Earthborn is a series of bronze sculptures inspired by the progressions, structures and designs of nature. This body of work is a personal exploration of sculptural forms that evoke emergence, renewal, continuity, and balance. Diverse perspectives exist about nature, people who respect the eco-structures or those who seek to control and claim them. No matter our conviction or life-style, Mother Earth is at the center of our existence. My love of the outdoors motivates me to create sculpture that reflects the essence, contour and texture of nature. Earthborn expresses my belief that a harmonious existence with the planet needs to be a priority of mankind.
Wayne Shaffer is a sculptor, craftsman and teacher. He received his BFA in sculpture in 1980 from Colorado State University where he studied metal casting with John Berland and ceramics with Richard Devore. The vessel, human form and landscape are all recurring themes in his work. Nature in all its forms has been a consistent inspiration throughout his artistic career.
In 1982 Wayne relocated to the Bay Area to work in the bronze casting industry. Two decades later he continues to work as a sculptor and teacher of visual arts. Wayne’s work has been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Oakland and Mendocino since the early 90’s. Public institutions and numerous private individuals have collected his work.
He maintains a studio and foundry in Oakland where he lives with his wife Lisa Considine and his two daughters, Aislynn and Isabel.
